Skincare Is for Everyone – Including Men
Male and Female Skin: Different, But Not That Different
The hormone testosterone plays a key role in defining the characteristics of male skin, leading to structural differences from female skin. While every individual is unique, male skin—both on the face and body—is generally thicker, oilier, and agesdifferently.
1. Men’s Skin Is Thicker
On average, male skin is 10% to 20% thicker than female skin, largely due to a denser dermis—the second layer of skin. This thickness comes from greater elasticity. As a result, men’s skin is naturally more resistant to fine lines and early wrinkling.
2. Men’s Skin Ages Differently
Both sexes lose collagen with age, but men experience a steady decline, while women undergo a more dramatic loss, especially after menopause. Women may see sudden thinning and visible aging, while men develop deeper wrinkles earlier, particularly from repetitive facial expressions like frowning or smiling. Sagging often anti-aging skincare routines earlier than women.
3. Men’s Skin Is Oiler
Male skin produces more sebum due to larger and more active oil glands, which leads to oilier, shinier skin with more visible pores. While this natural oil can help maintain hydration and a youthful appearance, it also increases the risk of acne. A consistent cleansing routine and early use of acne treatments are especially important for men.
4. Shaving Adds Unique Challenges
Shaving acts as a mechanical exfoliant, reducing the need for additional exfoliating products. However, daily shaving can also irritate the skin and increase sensitivity. To protect the skin:
- Use a hydrating, soothing shaving cream to reduce friction.
- Shave in the direction of hair growth to prevent ingrown hairs and microtears.
- Avoid shaving too closely.
- Replace razors regularly to reduce irritation and infection risk.
- Choose aftershave products designed for sensitive skin to help calm and hydrate post-shave.
5. Men Prefer Simplicity
While men benefit from the same active ingredients as women, their preferences often lean toward simpler, more streamlined routines. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is essential—ideally in a lightweight moisturizer for convenience. Men often prefer lotions, gels, or fluids over heavier creams and ointments, valuing ease of use and a non-greasy feel. Aftershave products that soothe and hydrate are also a key part of the routine, especially for men with coarse or curly hair, or sensitive skin prone to razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae).
6. Men Lose Their Hair
Hair thinning and loss are more common in men, and while it’s more socially accepted, that doesn’t mean it should be ignored. There are effective options for promoting hair growth, from over-the-counter foams to prescription treatments. With hair loss, the scalp becomes more exposed to UV damage, making sunscreen application to the scalp (or wearing a hat) increasingly important.
7. Skin Cancer: A Greater Risk for Men
Men have higher rates of skin cancer than women. Between 1982 and 2017, the rate of melanoma more than doubled in men, rising by 135%, compared to a 63% increase in women. This underscores the importance of sun protection—every day, year-round. The familiar sun-safe message of slip, slop, slap, slide, seek should
- Schedule outdoor activities outside peak times, when possible.
- Screen your skin monthly for new or changing skin lesions.
- Surveillance means being proactive about early detection. Attend regular skin checks with a healthcare provider.
8. Men may feel more overwhelmed by skincare product options, and not know where to start.
The array of cleansers, serums, moisturisers, and treatments on the market can seem confusing, excessive or intimidating. But skincare doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. A simple routine with a few key steps—such as a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser with SPF for the day, and a basic night cream or treatment—is more than enough to start building healthy skin habits. As familiarity grows, products can be added based on specific concerns. Begin with the basics, like the ABCs [insert link], and build from there. The key is to start simple, stay consistent, and choose products that feel good on your skin.
Skincare for men should be normalized and stripped of stigma – not about vanity; about self-respect, health, and prevention. Just like brushing your teeth, staying active, or eating well, caring for your skin is a foundational part of looking after yourself. Men’s skin may differ from women’s, but not so much that it doesn’t deserve care and attention. Understanding these differences allows for a personalised approach that is practical, effective, and aligned with men’s preferences. Ultimately, good skincare isn’t about gender—it’s about confidence, comfort, and long-term wellbeing.
