Hyperpigmentation and Melasma
Evidence-Based, Dermatologist-Formulated Care.
Hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone and dark spots are common and frustrating concerns, often caused by factors like sun exposure, inflammation from skin disorders such as acne or eczema, or hormonal changes or conditions. Hyperpigmentation occurs when an overproduction of melanin leads to darkened areas or uneven patches of skin, which can leave our complexion looking dull and uneven.
Common causes include melasma, which is hormonally driven and often associated with oestrogen and progesterone imbalances, hypothyroidism, insulin resistance, and conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) typically occurs after acne, eczema, or skin injury, and is more prominent in darker skin tones, Solar lentigines and freckles are chronic sun-induced pigment changes, often worsening with age and cumulative sun exposure (including ultraviolet, visible and high-intensity blue light), especially in fair skin types, Maturational hyperpigmentation typically presents as a diffuse, symmetrical darkening of the face, favouring the lateral cheeks, temples, and jawline. It predominantly affects individuals with darker skin tones and tends to develop gradually from our mid-30s onward. It is thought to result from long-term exposure to low-grade systemic stress, such as from underlying metabolic disturbances, including insulin resistance, subclinical hypothyroidism, and chronic inflammation, oxidative damage, and cumulative sun exposure, Medications, such as some antibiotics, antipsychotics, antimalarials, amiodarone, antiretrovirals or NSAIDs, and some other medical conditions and lifestyle factors such as Addison’s disease (adrenal insufficiency), haemochromatosis (iron overload) and heavy metal exposure (arsenic, gold, silver, iron and/or lead), chronic stress, poor liver function, smoking and nutritional deficiencies (such as low vitamin D or B12) may further exacerbate pigmentation.
Effective treatment often requires addressing both the skin and the underlying cause.
